As beautiful as Begonia’s are, they are poisonous to our pets. Begonias are interesting and beautiful plants that many people want to keep as houseplants but if you have a dog or cat in your home that is liable to nibble on your foliage then you may want to reconsider keeping a Begonia indoors.
Begonias are a plant that can be incredibly dangerous to our pets. If ingested the Begonia can cause significant irritation in the throat and mouth. This plant can also cause vomiting, drooling and can present problems in swallowing for your pet.
Not only is this incredibly uncomfortable and unpleasant for your dog or cat, but its also dangerous for the animal.
If you have a dog then you could get around this problem by keeping your plant out of reach of the dog as long as there is no way they can access it. If you have a cat then you may want to rethink getting this plant altogether as cats are such good climbers and even with your best intentions they can still access difficult to get to places.
If this is the case then don’t worry. There are still plenty of beautiful houseplants and flowers that are safe to own if you have a cat or a dog. You might just need to be less picky.
Some examples of plants that are safe for dogs and cats include:
- Many types of palm
- African Voilets
- Spider plant
- Boston Fern
Some people have dogs that don’t touch their plants and only eat their own food but even if this is the case, there is always the possibility that your dog might have a nibble of your plants one day and this could make them seriously ill. So make sure you check all of your plants to see if they could harm your pets.
