If you’re looking for a houseplant with green leaves and purple underside because you like the idea of that, or if you’ve seen a green and purple houseplant but you can’t remember the name then we’ve compiled some of the most common houseplants with purple under leaves and how to care for them.

Houseplants with green leaves and purple underside

Here are some popular houseplants that have green leaves on top purple underneath.

Calathea Medallion

Light: Medium indirect
Watering: Frequent
Soil: Peaty mix
Humidity: Medium to high
Ease of looking after: Moderate to difficult

Other types of Calathea also have a purplish tinge on the undersides of their leaves but the Calathea Medallion is the Calathea where its purple undersides are the most noticeable. The Calathea Medallion is a fantastic statement plant with beautiful big round green leaves and the best thing about them is their purple under leaves.

Oyster Plant

Watering: Water thoroughly when top soil has dried out
Soil: Well draining
Ease of looking after: Easy

The Oyster Plant is a great houseplant with green leaves on top purple underneath. The plant is native to central and south America so if you live in a cooler climate you’ll have to keep it as a houseplant but not to worry as their purple glow will add colour to any room.

Calathea Rufibarba

Another common Calathea houseplant with purple under leaves is the Calathea Rufibarba. It has similar care requirements to the Calathea Medallion in that it’s a bit fussy but once you’ve learnt how to look after one there’s no reason they shouldn’t thrive in your home.

Wandering Jew

Our final houseplant with purple under leaves is the Wandering Jew otherwise known as the Tradescantia Zebrina which is becoming an increasingly popular houseplant.

If you thought those houseplants were cool then take a look at some houseplants with green and pink leaves or even some red and green plants.
