How Accurate Are Humidity Meters?

Humidity meters (or hygrometers) are devices used to record the levels of moisture in the air to give you a humidity reading. They are very common in industrial settings but are becoming more and more popular in people’s homes as they begin to keep houseplants.

Monitoring the level of humidity in your home can be very useful as it can stop a room from becoming too dry or your plants from receiving too much moisture, but one of the main questions people ask is how accurate are humidity meters? Is there any point in keeping a humidity meter in your home if it’s not displaying the correct humidity level.

Well this all depends on the model you buy, some hygrometers are more accurate than others so this should be a factor when buying one. Most of the models include an accuracy gauge to show within what percentage they are accurate by. There are many models that claim accuracy within 2% either side of the level they’re reporting that are affordable and look good in your home. If you’re using the gauge for monitoring humidity then 2% accuracy should work well for you.

If you want to test your humidity meters then try buying several different models and see how close their detecting range is. Are they reporting figures that are very different from one of another or are there similarities across the board. If they seem to be quite similar within a few % then they’re probably working well enough for you to get a good read of your room in order to provide the ideal environment for your plants.
