Peperomia Light Requirements: Medium to bright indirect light

Peperomia plants will do well under medium to bright indirect light. Sometimes they get labelled as low light houseplants, and while some varieties can tolerate lower lighting conditions, they prefer things to be a bit brighter. They don’t often tolerate intense light either, so finding a nice middle ground for your plant is ideal. Peperomia light requirements are medium to bright indirect light. Luckily this plant will let you know if you’ve put it in a spot that’s too dim or too bright.

Too Little Light

If your Peperomia is receiving too little light, the first sign you may notice is it becoming leggy. The stems will start to elongate as they search for a light source and there will be a greater distance between each set of new leaves. This probably isn’t a look you want for your Peperomia but you can always prune these sections off and place your plant nearer a stronger light source. The plant should then continue to grow normally.

If you don’t recognise these signs and you leave your plant in an area with dim light you may notice it’s growth starting to slow. If the light is very faint then your Peperomia may even start to die. That’s why it’s important to look out for these signs so you can keep your plant looking as healthy as possible, and in worst case scenario, to stop it from dying.

Too Much Light

Too much light can be just as damaging as too little light when it comes to Peperomia light requirements. If your plant is sitting in direct sunlight then it’s very likely it’s receiving too much sunlight. The more succulent the plant the more they can handle brighter light, but for the varieties of Peperomia with thinner leaves, they may really struggle with intense sun.

Signs of too much sunlight may include scorching of the leaves or them turning brown or red, and leave starting to curl in on themselves. Leaves tend to do this when they’re trying to conserve water; it’s a way to protect the plant. So if you notice any of these signs and your plant is in a bright spot with access to direct sunlight then you may want to move it to a more shaded area. If not your Peperomia plant may start using up its water reserves too quickly and can become dehydrated.
